posted by brakken 09-25-2007 |
 |
The Wiikey Team have released a recovery disc for botched Wiikey v1.9b firmware upgrades.
"The recovery disc for wiikey 1.9b has been added to the Resources section. If the upgrade process is interrupted before reflashing is completed the wiikey chip will be left in an inoperable state where it cannot load GC/Wii discs. The Recovery disc can be used to restore its firmware."

Multi-Game ISO Creator v3.1.4 |
posted by brakken 09-25-2007 |
 |
Although Emu_Kidid's GCOS v4.0 comes with an ISO building tool to create Multi-Game ISO images one can appreciate Patman666's latest release. He's released a new version of his Windows based ISO Creator which is now compatible with GCOS v4.0. This tool not only allows you to build ISO images, but will let you shrink your GameCube backups to allow for more room on your DVD and also will allow you to extract backups from an already created image.

Mplayer features support for MPEG/VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, RealMedia, Matroska, NUT, NuppelVideo, FLI, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5 and even WMV movies.

Wiikey v1.9b Update Leaked |
posted by brakken 09-24-2007 |
 |
One of the Wiikey beta testers decided to leak an internal version of the much sought after Wiikey Nintendo Wii modification chip firmware update. I'm sure the flamers that speculated it would never be released will find something else to rant about now, but for those of you who still own and use a Wiikey chip you're in luck.
The update itself looks as if it's been hacked as it features a picture of a females rear end and reads "666" as the version. Looks like the person who released it wanted to send a message to the Wiikey Team.
It's been reported that the update works flawlessly and also will work on most clones that are on the market. Note that the update doesn't come with the updated configuration or utility discs.
Features
* audiofix fixed
* dual layer support (no bitsetting required)
* improved media support (all supported chipsets)
* full Gamecube regionfree (no-swap/video setup)
* various “smaller” improvements/fixes
* workaround for FW 3.0 gameid limitation (existing wkb 1.2 discs will boot again)
* “on the fly” settings for gc games (by holding buttons)
* toggle audiofix, diskspeed, force NTSC/PAL

ICE Raids News Roundup |
posted by brakken 08-02-2007 |
 |
Hours after I posted the link to the Yahoo article explaining the ICE raids on modchip sellers and installers the news started to make it's rounds on larger console modification sites.Anyway, it seems that the word is starting to trickle out on who got busted. Also, Nintendo has commented on the situation and it seems they are the ones who pressured the recent busts.
"In 2002, bills such as the Digital Media Consumer Rights Act, H.R. 5544, were introduced, that among other things would create a fair use exception to the DMCA's bans on circumvention. Moreover, it would not be a violation to manufacture, distribute, or make non-infringing use of a hardware or software product capable of enabling significant non-infringing use of a copyrighted work, and thus would allow consumers to make backup copies of their media."

Wii Boss Nintendo Wii Modchip Announced |
posted by brakken 08-01-2007 |
 |
A new blank modchip has hit the Nintendo Wii scene. It features a simple 12f629 which can be programmed with it's external programmer with the free/open source modchip code of your liking. Sadly, it's limited to using a serial port which most modern computers are lacking. The real kicker is the products competitive pricing of only $25 USD.
Wii-BOSS! The world first fully upgradeable internal modchip for the Nintendo Wii.
“Almost all other conventional and homebrew modchips consist of two parts where the code is held, of which only the smaller EEPROM section of the chip can be changed easily. This EEPROM part of the code is very useful for small pre defined simple on or off selectable 1’s and 0’s and possibly a very small “additional feature” section. For example: Speed setting your chip or enabling multi-zone. However, if you want to update the entire chip, you need to physically remove the chip from the Wii, put it on a programmer, reprogram it, and then reinstall the chip into the Wii. This is not something you want to be doing constantly keep up with new optimized modchip codes for the Nintendo Wii.”
• The Wii-Boss is designed as a ‘quick solder’ chip with an external ribbon cable that can be left inside the machine, taped down on the back of the Wii, or even hidden inside the memory card bay. This chip can be fully programmed inside the machine with any code that supports the 12f629 PIC Microchip.
• The Wii-Boss is also designed to allow external booting off the ribbon cable, therefore protecting the user against ever having to pull the Wii apart ever again if their requirements for a particular style of modchip change. External adapters to make competitor modchips and PC applications like DVD-Tool boot externally have already been designed and will be produced soon after the initial release of the premier product for a very minimal charge. These will likely be included in future kits at no extra charge.
• The Wii-boss even comes packaged with its own RS-232 port external programmer. Software for the programmer is open source and therefore also provided free. The programmer is based on an open source project and therefore could be ‘modded’, theoretically, to be used as a standard RS-232 PIC programmer.
• R.R.P. for the entire packed is USD$25 including the Wii-SP JDM programmer. The cost will obviously much cheaper in bulk quantities. Wholesale quantities start from just 2 kits.
At the time of writing the wii-boss supported the following codes (in no particular order):
Wii-Free - last stable release ver2.45
YOASM - last stable release ver1.7
Winja – last stable release ver2.0 (deluxe currently not available)
Open-Wii - last stable release ver1.3
Wii-skas - last stable release unknown
MaxBoot - last stable release ver1.0 (redirection code for external booting)
Supported software for the programmer:
IC Prog ver 1.05e
